How to start learning for new GPs: Using the RACGP guidelines

Updated: Oct 1, 2024

The RACGP have guidelines for the common conditions managed in general practice which is an excellent resource to ensure that you provide the highest standard of care for your patients. I also use these guidelines to add extra information to my revision notes especially the management aspects.

GPs are expected to know what guidelines the college has published and there are many helpful charts and diagrams that can be used as a quick reference guide during your consultations. The earlier that you review these guidelines the more helpful they will be in your clinical practice and you can ensure that you formulate an appropriate management plan.

When I was revising I made a list of the guidelines in order that I wanted to review them and ticked them off as I went along to ensure I didn't miss any. I prioritised the most commonly used guidelines such as the management of diabetes mellitus as I was more likely to use it sooner.

Next steps:

  • Review the RACGP clinical guidelines from their website: https://www.racgp.org.au/clinical-resources/clinical-guidelines

  • Work through the guidelines and make notes as you go along (will also serve as revision notes for exams)

  • Bookmark important guidelines to your work computer tab for easy access.

  • Ensure that you review any new updates and changes.
