Would you like a CV that stands out from the crowd? In this post I will show you one technique to achieve this. As doctors and students we have a CV which we spend a lot of time writing and considering how we present the best of our work. Most of us have done similar courses, completed the same exams and unsurprisingly end up with very similar CVs. Although you cannot change the content itself, you can present it in a different way that is eye-catching to the reader.
I normally update my CV every 3-4 months to make sure it remains up to date and ready to send in case anyone asks. This strategy definitely paid off when recently at work in the emergency department I was asked for a copy of my CV by a senior doctor visiting the department. Just before I sent it through a thought ran across my mind- is it memorable enough?
Like most doctors my CV was created on Microsoft Word and consisted of paragraphs arranged into neat bullet points under the usual headings such as previous employment. I had recently completed an online module on LinkedIn Learning and the guest speaker worked at a company called Canva. I was impressed enough to look it up and then inspiration hit me. I could use a free template on Canva to create a professional CV that was unique and therefore memorable.
I signed up to Canva immediately and chose a CV template that was professional, copied and pasted the content of my Word document into Canva. Within 30 minutes I created an entirely new look for my CV! The layout that I chose I was even allowed me to cut down the number of pages from 3 to 2 while retaining all the important information.
One of the main benefits of Canva is that there are many free templates and you can edit them as you like. It is better to keep the colour scheme professional as your potential employer will read it. The completed CV can be downloaded as a pdf document ready to be sent and also edited as you need in the future as it stays in your account.
I cannot impress enough how helpful Canva was for me to create a stylish new CV with all the important content still preserved. There are also many other templates such as Instagram stories and business cards that you can use for your personal or professional life. Have fun creating!
