Read this book! Outer Order Inner Calm by Gretchen Rubin

Updated: Sep 5, 2022

Have you ever heard of the term 'clutter-blind'? Does this describe someone you know or even youself? I would highly recommend the book Outer Order Inner Calm by the fantastic author and podcaster Gretchen Rubin, one of the world's experts on happiness. There are tips to help you save money, time and energy arguing with your spouse/ housemates with the ultimate goal to help you lead a more fulfilling and harmonious life.

The structure of the book is cleverly designed in a way to allow for easy reading which visually reflects her theme that outer order is essential. This is not another de-cluttering book as it engages the reader to think through their decision on cleaning by asking questions.

A few specific topics that are tackled include:

  • Overspending vs underspending- why both can be a problem and how to manage this.

  • To bulk buy items or not. The answer is no!

  • Clutter- people perceive their environment differently and how to tackle this practically.

  • Why having a clean, tidy (clutter-free) space is beneficial for our wellbeing and mental health.

  • How to add beauty to your home (unsurprisingly this does increase happiness!)

One of the reasons that this book is different to many other de-cluttering books is that Gretchen Rubin touches on easy ways to cultivate good habits and keep the outer order going. It is not essential for everyone to take all the suggestions in the book but choose what works for you and your situation.

After you read this book, you can listen to the author discuss it on one of my favourite podcasts – The Science of Success released on May 19th 2022.
