Fungal organisms are increasingly becoming resistant to anti-fungal treatment and posing a threat to modern medicine, from critically unwell patients to those with chronic diseases. Most recently, the increase in mucormycosis infections in patients with COVID-19 has been in the news, especially in India, and there are difficulties treating these patients as a result of resistance to medicine. The threat of resistance is not only present in developing countries but is a global public health issue that needs to be addressed urgently.
In October 2022 the World Health Organisation published the first list of fungal infections of concern to address these issues on a global scale, many of these are commonly seen in clinical practice rather than being rare which highlights the importance of this publication.
